Call for Interest for delivery of CO2 by rail

CO2next is pleased to announce the launch of a Call for Interest for the expansion of the liquid CO2next terminal with a CO2 railcar unloading facility. All market participants are invited to express their interest in the delivery of CO2 by rail. Expressions of interest can be submitted until April 2, 2026.

About this Call for Interest

CO2next invites all interested parties to participate in this Call for Interest. The purpose is to assess market interest and support decision-making regarding the development of the CO2 railcar unloading facility. The Call for Interest follows a feasibility study in which, among other things, the availability of the location and layouts for the CO2 railcar unloading facility were assessed, safety studies were conducted, and the permitting process and pathway toward realization was mapped out. A summary of the feasibility study is provided by this link.

Expanding the opportunities for CC(U)S in Europe

CO2next is developing an open-access, non-discriminatory liquid CO₂ terminal at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam as part of new CO₂ infrastructure. The terminal will be accessible to industries that capture CO₂ and require reliable solutions for permanent storage in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea (CCS), as well as future options for CO₂ reuse (CCU).

By enabling CO₂ storage and reuse, the terminal helps reduce emissions and contributes to Dutch and European climate objectives, while safeguarding a sustainable future for industry.

The terminal is planned at a strategic location with excellent accessibility via inland waterways, sea, and rail, and direct access to the Aramis offshore pipeline for transport to North Sea storage sites.
The current development phase focuses on the handling, storage, and transshipment of liquid CO₂ delivered by ship.

This Expression of Interest seeks to establish market demand for a facility to unload liquid CO₂ delivered by rail, as an addition to the currently planned CO₂next terminal in Rotterdam. This creates new opportunities for CC(U)S, especially for industries that are not located near waterways or a CO₂ pipeline. This new capability contributes to building a fully integrated CO₂ transport network that enables large‑scale CCS in Europe.
