CO2next: progress and outlook

As 2025 comes to a close, CO2next looks back on a year of progress and ahead to key milestones in 2026. While CCS projects are ramping up across Europe and the regulatory framework is becoming clearer –  procedures, regulations, and costs remain important considerations. In this dynamic landscape, CO2next has further strengthened its foundation toward realization.

FEED package ready for the next phase
The FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) has largely come to a close. Technical design, studies, risk analyses, and specifications now form a robust package, providing a safe and solid basis for the next phase of engineering and tendering. Delivered in close collaboration between our partner Sener Ingenieria y Sistemas S.A. (Sener) and our technical team, the package reflects deep expertise, technical knowledge, and a continuous focus on quality and safety.

Growing international interest
CO2next is increasingly recognized as an accessible and flexible link in the European CO₂ infrastructure, particularly for parties for whom pipeline transport is not feasible or timely. Across several countries, we engaged with industrial parties on the delivery of liquid CO₂ to our terminal. Delivery by ship clearly meets many parties’ needs, and interest in an additional delivery option – via rail – continues to grow.

Permits and support
Important progress was made in permitting. The building permit for the terminal is now irrevocable; all other major permits were also granted, but these are unfortunately subject to appeal. The Ministry of Climate and Green Growth has reserved funding for investments in CO₂ capture, transport, and storage – including our project. This underlines the importance of the timely realisation of projects like CO2next in achieving climate goals while supporting a future-proof industrial base.

Preparing for the future
Beyond engineering, permitting and commercial activities, 2025 saw us focusing on preparations for commissioning, start-up and operation of the future terminal, keeping safety always as a core principle. Collaboration with partners and stakeholders was further strengthened, and team members contributed to knowledge sharing across the CCS value chain.Together with Porthos and Aramis, we also organized a first CCS-themed day for students, fostering dialogue with the next generation of professionals of the future.

Looking ahead to 2026
With a solid foundation in place, we look forward to seeing the remaining permits become irrevocable,  finalising our tender packages and issuing the tenders, firming up the commercial contracts with customers – all necessary steps toward a positive Final Investment Decision.

On behalf of CO2next team, we thank all partners and stakeholders for their continued commitment and collaboration, and wish everyone happy holidays and a bright and positive 2026!
