The plans for the CO2next railcar unloading facility are still at an early stage. If there is sufficient interest in the development of this option, the permitting process will be initiated. The permitting process will be accompanied by an extensive information and participation process. Of course, if you already have any questions at this moment, you can always contact us via info@CO2next.nl.
What are the plans for delivery by rail?
The current development phase of CO2next focuses on the handling, storage, and transshipment of liquid CO₂ delivered by ship. As not all industrial companies that want to capture and store CO₂ via CCS are located near water or CO₂ pipeline, CO2next studies the possibilities of delivery of CO2 by rail. In 2025 a feasibility study was carried out. From March 4, 2026 till April 2, 2026 , a Call for Interest is taking place, to assess the level of interest among industrial parties in delivery of CO₂ by rail. If there is sufficient interest, developing this option could be a valuable addition to the solutions available to the industry to deliver CO2 for permanent storage under the North Sea. The next step would then be to further develop the plans and initiate the permitting process. During the permitting process, everyone will have the opportunity to share their views on the project.
Why is CO₂next having a Call for Interest?
The Call for Interest concerns the interest in expanding the terminal with a facility for unloading liquid CO2 that is delivered by rail. The current development phase focuses on the handling, storage, and transshipment of liquid CO₂ delivered by ship. Not all industrial companies that want to capture and store CO₂ via CCS are located near water or CO₂ pipeline. For these companies, delivery via rail can be a good option to still capture and supply their CO₂ for storage under the North Sea, preventing this CO₂ from being released into the atmosphere.
What is a Call for Interest
A Call for Interest is a period during which a project invites parties to express their interest in using a service, capacity, or infrastructure. It helps the project see who is interested and whether it is worthwhile to develop the service or infrastructure, and how much capacity would be needed.
